Accounting Degrees - What Career Options Are Available?

In today's world, there is an increasing need for accounting professionals. With the number of accounting fraud cases, the government has reacted with legislation and regulation that puts the responsibility on businesses to ensure their practices are in compliance. This in turn has created a job surge in the accounting field. If you are thinking of getting your accounting degree, you may be wondering what career options are available.

In the third year of your accounting education you will choose a specialty. This will likely determine the type of job that you will hold and the career path you will take. Some typical positions include public accountant, forensic accountant, corporate accountant, auditor, and internal compliance manager, just to name a few.

Accountants work in many different environments. Almost every business needs some form of accountant or accounting department. Some of the most common industries for accountants include banks, nonprofit organizations, law firms, retail, and government agencies.

If you have the entrepreneurial spirit, you can also open up your own practice. This can include offering many different services as a general accountant. Or, you can specialize in just one specialty and offer only tax or estate services.

Earning your accounting degree will give you flexibility and the opportunity to enter many different career fields. Gone are the days of accountants sitting in a stuffy office crunching numbers. The current possibilities are endless! Just bear in mind that you will likely have to take your CPA exam prior to obtaining most positions.
