All About Accounting Degrees and Getting My CPA

Being such a sought after degree, the accounting degree is readily available in almost all learning institutions nationwide though not at all of them, so you will need to do your research to find the best accounting degree programs available. Some programs are also not conducive to eventually obtaining your CPA so if this is where you want to head, then make sure that your accounting degree program can set you up for studying further to get your CPA. Look for a college that has a reputable name in accounting, one that could be backed by leading firms in the country.



To study an accounting degree you will need to have excellent skills in mathematics, analytics, problem solving as well as good computer skills, as all accounting is now computer based. You can choose from a number of different programs, but for would be CPA's be careful that the school you choose has an accounting degree that meets the requirements as set out by the Certified Public Accountants licensing authority in your state. If it doesn't and you want to do your CPA, then you will need to look elsewhere for an accounting degree program that does.



Most community colleges and schools offer an Associate Degree in Accounting, but for further advancement, an MBA with a focus on Accounting, a Masters in Accounting or a Bachelors Accounting Degree would be preferable. Masters and Bachelors Accounting Degrees will prepare you for your eventual CPA if that is your chosen path.



Before sitting for your CPA exam, you will be able to do a review exam to prepare yourself and also see how prepared you are. This exam is a good idea to determine where you will come out after your CPA exam. If this is not available on campus, then look for somewhere within your city that does offer it.



To get your CPA, you will need 150 college credits as well as a Bachelors degree at the very minimum, however these credit requirements vary from one state to the next. You will need to speak to your chosen college's registration office to determine exactly what is required to take your accounting degree to CPA.



While you are making inquiries into the status of the accounting degree program at your chosen college, also contact the career Services Department and see if there are any major accounting firms that visit the college regularly to recruit students as interns. If the major firms are endorsing your college then you know that the school has the correct formula for a winning accounting degree that will open doors for you.
