How Much Is an Accounting Degree Worth?

Accounting is in the top 10 in demand career fields currently. This is due to the many new regulations and restrictions that the government has placed on businesses. The career field continues to grow and prospects look good into the next decade according the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But, how much is an accounting degree worth really?



As with all career fields, with each higher accounting degree comes increased responsibility and pay. A bachelor's degree is typically required for the more senior entry level positions. Starting salaries range according to position, company, and location. However, most start around $38,000 - $51,000.



A master's degree will qualify you for the more senior positions, such as internal auditor, financial controller, and senior accountant. These positions start around $45,000 - $62,000, but can go as high as $125,000 depending on the years of experience.



A PhD or DBA in accounting is the terminal degree offered in the career field. It is for those that wish to pursue academia or research, which the need for is rising. The salary for accounting professors varies by institution; however, they typically range from $125,000 to $137,000. Those that choose to follow the research path generally make the same or slightly lower than that.



So, how much is an accounting degree worth to you? Accounting is no different from other career fields, the higher your education, the higher your salary and responsibility.
