Pursuing Your PhD by Publication

The PhD by publication must be in accordance to the doctoral rules and regulations of the university. Individuals wishing to pursue PhD by publication must be well aware of this arrangement.



The PhD by publication is awarded to individuals who are either the author or the joint author and have made an original scholarly contribution as an independent researcher to knowledge. The publication is judged by an international standard of a group of independent experts who identify if the publication does in fact meet the required standards of an international level. The individual's original and copy of their submission is then deposited at the Library in the university.



Eligibility



Keep in mind, that if you are interested in pursuing your PhD by publication, it is vital that you are an established researcher. If you are simply a student enrolled at a PhD program at a university, you are not eligible.



Enrollment



The candidate when enrolling to pursue a PhD by publication, is provided with two supervisors who can assist with the thesis preparation. A Doctoral assessment is conducted at the completion of the first semester, in order to make certain that the candidate has in fact the capability to complete the requirements of the thesis.



Submission



The thesis which is submitted is a combination of published works and an integrating paper. The number of words in the paper consist of between five thousand and ten thousand words. This publication is set as an original contribution to knowledge. In certain cases, the candidate might be requested to take on additional research and to present the publication as an integrated entity.



Examination



Examination for PhD by publication is carried out similarly to other doctoral exams. There are at east three examiners, of whom two are external examiners.



Process of application



Initially, the preliminary application is submitted to the department where you originally enrolled at. This application is then assessed on the basis of your eligibility to enroll and whether your publications in fact can form the foundation to your thesis. Generally, there is a variation between faculties when processing an application. But, the basis requirements insists that along with the preliminary application you have to attach all supporting documents. Some of these documents required are:



- your curriculum vitae
- publications in chronological order
- information regarding the submitted publications
- if the publication are jointly authored, a statement presenting this fact
- details of previously awarded qualifications
