Accounting is one of the most secure career choices anyone can make. Every company no matter how large or small needs accountants to keep there books and pay the bills.
Like every field of study, it should be thought out. While it is appealing, it's not for everyone. Below are a few things to consider before pursuing a career in accounting.
Math skills
Accounting is all about numbers. Needless to say it's vital that you have a good working knowledge in math and the manipulation of numbers. Since math builds upon itself, it's important to keep up and not fall behind even when you're still in grade school.
Nontraditional schools
While most traditional universities all offer accounting degrees, don't feel like this is your only option. Many prestigious schools are now offering degrees online that can be taken in the comfort of your own home. This is especially appealing for older students who decide to go back to school.
Choose your area of expertise wisely
The field of accounting is very broad. At some point you'll need to narrow it down to a specific area of expertise. Public, government, and management accounting or internal auditing is 3 of the most popular accounting fields. Eventually your class load will reflect your chosen accounting field.
Experience counts
While classes are an important place to start, real learning comes from on-the-job training. Since many companies are leery of hiring anyone with little or no experience, you may have to start as in intern and work your way up. While it may be frustrating at first, hang in there. With a little perseverance, you'll eventually land that perfect job.
